Calvin D. Sun, MD is a board-certified Emergency Medicine Physician, published author, public speaker, activist, and entrepreneur based in NYC. Graduating from Columbia University and SUNY Downstate College of Medicine respectively as Vice President and President of his classes, Dr. Sun was also a host on MTVu’s hit show “The Freshmen" from 2004-2008 and an award-winning independent filmmaker. He is known for his films on Asian American stereotypes and female body image, the last of which won the inaugural One to Watch Audience Award at the 2007 Asian American International Film Festival. His work on Asian American body image has been published in various articles and books, including The American Beauty Industry Encyclopedia.As the Founder of The Monsoon Diaries, Dr. Sun has had the privilege of seeing his solo-travel blog that he started in the summer before medical school turn into an accidental adventure travel company and worldwide collective that has now taken thousands of people to over 190 countries and territories in the past 12 years including as far as Nauru and Antarctica. The Monsoon Diaries has since been featured on BBC, ABC, Huffington Post, Business Insider, MSNBC, TED, National Geographic, and USA Today, with a recent publication as a trade book and memoir of the same name by HarperCollins. To this day he continues to regularly travel every month to a new destination around the world while taking along anyone who wants to join.Dr. Sun completed his residency training specializing in Emergency Medicine at the combined Jacobi Medical Center and Montefiore Medical Center Emergency Medicine program in 2018 where he also served as the Director of Resident Wellness. Calvin now practices as a board-certified attending physician and Clinical Assistant Professor at numerous sites around the city, as well as large-scale races; since 2018 he has been the Chief Medical Officer at the finish line of the annual NYC Marathon.Finally, Dr. Sun has been notable for his first-hand reporting on the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic in New York City emergency rooms and his experiences were chronicled in the aforementioned publication by HarperCollins into a memoir titled The Monsoon Diaries, now distributed and on sale around the world. Finally, he has been a prolific nationwide public speaker since 2008, and continues to be one of the most active in the Asian American speaking circuit.
